I see what you are saying, but I don't think you can discount the symbolism like all the Joan of Arc references in the video; the crosses, etc, and not think he is talking about faith in God. Joan of Arc held her faith even as she was burned at the stake. But you are right in that nobody knows the whole story of the song and video except Sting himself.
