For those in the work force, this video is just perfect.Maggie's Farm is not healthy. I think there are all too many of us that can see ourselves in that video. The computer was supposed to make things easier for us with less time. So how come it didn't? The computer was seen as a tool for people to spend less time working and more time partaking in creative pursuits. Didn't happen. We're slaves to the machine now, and it won't stop in the near future. It didn't promote creativity, it killed it.

If you think you have a right to a certain wage, or to time-and-a-half, then you're in the wrong country, guy. Read the US constitution. All of the rights it outlines are "negative rights," meaning they're guarantees that other people can't do certain things to you (like kill you, or quarter troops in your digs). The min. wage does not stop exploitation, b/c in this country there is very little exploitation to stop. In the free market workers get paid what their work is worth. If they aren't paid enough, they make like a tree, and find some other employer who'll pay more. When the min. wage is raised, employers are less likely to hire unskilled workers, whose work is not worth much. So a lot of unskilled, poor people can't find jobs. So the min. wage increases unemployment amongst the poor.

stlad, you're right, workers can quit a union job, but can a company quit a union workforce? Not really. Contracts may prevent them from firing everyone and replacing them with non-union workers, not to mention the riots that would probably occur. The unions extort from the companies, not the workers (unless you count the union dues that workers forced to pay.)

stlad, nobody likes a pay cut, but sometimes the value of a job goes down, even if the company profits go up. For example, let's say that for the past 3 years, trade schools cranked out a lot more diesel machanics than normal. Maybe some movie glamourized the profession, trade schools had sales on that program, who knows. The fact is, the market is now flooded with diesel mechanics. So, why should companies keep paying them $25/hr when new mechanics are lined up to take the job at $15/hr?

stlad, workers profit from their jobs or else they wouldn't bother going to work. Your wages minus your costs to go to work (gas, clothes, tools perhaps, etc) equals your profit. Workers sell their labor to companies, so workers are capitalists just like business owners are. Workers take a job at an agreed upon wage, so that is all they are entitled to, no matter how much record profits the owners make. Like I said, if you're envious, then go start your own business like they did.

But, unless the MARKET dictates that those workers deserve that bonus, then it's simply a gift. In other words, if Ford didn't give them that bonus, and the workers quit, do you think Ford would have one bit of trouble filling those vacated positions at the previous pay rate? The market determines what a job is worth, and if an employer freely chooses to pay overtime to attract and keep qualified workers, fine. Minimum wage is contributor to inflation. When a company is forced to pay more to their employees, Naturally, they are going to increase the price of their products. What if it's increased nine or ten dollars!? That will cause it to be twice what it was before. Can you imagine the effect? What about all that money you saved up for college? I agree that small businesses are an integral part of the economy. However, individuals come first. Those against the minimum wage love to talk about just finding a job that pays more, but tell that to a single parent who has just recently divorced with little to no work experience. I apologize if I come off like I'm attacking you, but this is something I feel pretty strongly about. My mom was in that situation, and I remember what it was like living on $400 a month with 3 other siblings.

I'm talking about the Federal Income Tax. Police are paid by local taxes, roads by gasoline tax, schools by property tax, etc. The Federal Income Tax is a voluntary tax. There is no law that states we must pay it or fill out a 1040. I'm going to sound like everyone else on here but whatever. I've lived on my own since I was 17 and have made hardly anything. Maybe a little more than minimum wage but not much and I have stayed alive and well. It's not impossible. You aren't paying for rent, electricity or any cost that you're required to pay while living on your own. You live with your parents. You have food to pay for and that's it. I wish I had it that easy, I would be going to school and not wasting my life.

To all those that say that the minimum wage will decrease jobs they are wrong in 1968 the purchasing power of the minimum wage was $9.50 an hour unemployement was at was one of the lowest in history at 3.5%. We need the minimum at $10 an hour to increase purchasing power.

Stop crying and get some focus in your life. I have two kids and a mortgage. I work two jobs, TWO and I may go to a third. My second job deals with the min wage and tips. On adverage I get $15 an hour from that second job. Why, Why can't you do that. What makes me differant from you? I struggle just like you. The government will tax you more with a increase. They have already raided the Social Sercurity trust fund and need more money, so lets raise the wage and get more tax money.

I stand corrected, watch the skies, I am wrong, and you are quite correct. Try harder WORKS. If I had'nt tried harder, when people said, "If this was real, we'd have seen it YEARS AGO". Well it IS real, I proved it, and now it has been all the rage since 2001, but I did it with 2-and 3-foot heavy-sheet metal saucers, with highr-power-levels, back in the 1990s.
