The most disturbing thing I find is that people support its corrupt and oppressive government- its not even about ideology or anything else. Yes you have ADEQUATE education and healthcare, but what can you do with them? Many Cubans just sit in their rocking chairs and pass the day away because there is no opportunity to fulfill your dreams, or even simple pleasures like speaking your mind. Technology is not the same as energy. Nanotechnologies still require energy input. Nothing we've developed yet has as much energy density as well as portability of oil. In the documentary "The Power of Community" which Megan talked about, we see how Cubans survived the sudden withdrawal of oil from their country. It was survival not necessarily preference.

Yes, I've been reading doom and gloom premonitions for as long as I care to remember. The world won't be as dependent on oil in ten years time. Society will make sure it isn't. $300? I can remember four months ago predictions that oil would be $200 a barrel by November this year.. well November is here and a barrel of the black stuff is barely $50. If you want to sit and convince yourself we'll all be living in caves by 2015 then be my guest but forgive me if I don't share your pessimism.

And if you think it's about having nothing left to sell, you're mistaken. We don't have to run out for the troubles to start. It's not about the size of the reserve, it's about the rate of flow relative to demand. There may be plenty of $200 or $300 a barrel oil in a few years, not so much at $100. Google IEA World Energy Outlook 2008 and check out the decline rates. And these guys are optimists!

Complete scaremongering crap. As long as I can remember the "end of oil" has just been around the corner. People love to have a good doomsday scenario, always conveniently just 5 or 6 years away. In the 1980's the talk was all of coal running out.. and guess what, we're all still alive. There is more oil within the planet than is conceivably imaginable, and the technology to pull it out advances year after year. Get over yourselves!

"Oil Companies" are actually Energy Suppliers and Exxon provides most of the Uranium to nuclear plants as well and Chevron is the largest producwer of commercial Geothermal Power and also Hydro-Electric. Saudis don't have as much oil that they say they do, but they are intentionally trickling the spigot. Truth of the matter is that a barrel is 47 gallons, and the Saudis get about 5 cents a gallon, and the Oil Companies make 10 cents a gallon of their end of the deal with government subsidies covering the loss of about $7 a gallon in transporting it and selling it to a refiner.

It looks like we're set to go off the oil plateau late this year/ early next year. Just focus on the bright side, like I did when I first found out that the peak was closer to 2005 than 2050. You don't feel as guilty about being unemployed (but this of course assumes you are unemployed.)

No, not really. The cumulative production curve from a single well follows a logistic "S" curve. When you take the derivative of this curve, it forms a bell-shaped "Hubbert" curve that looks similar to the gaussian curve that applies to the CLT. I love the speech, but the graphs are simply projections. These projections have proven time and time again to be wrong. I understand that oil is a finite resource and that resources are dwindling, but I don't think the sky is falling quite as soon as these projections would indicate. however to each his or her own... right ? :)

No, it isn't; shearing a sheep is just like shaving a person's hair. In fact, it might be even less invasive than that! :) With a good shearer, even foisting the sheep around doesn't cause them any pain or injury. It should be completely harmless for the sheep. :)
