In part 2 Joel Seigel states that she recorded Bobby McGee, went to Barney's Beanery had drinks, went back to the motel, spoke to the front desk clerk for change for the cigarettes, got cigarettes, and went back to her room. The only live performance of Bobby McGee that I knew of was the one at Threadgills in 1970, before she recorded it. She did sometimes sing songs live prior to their recordings so it is possible. I have a couple books and one video about Janis that claims that is what she recorded the night of her death. I don't know, there's conflicting information out there so without actually being there it's hard to say. In any case, it's a great song and she is missed! Peace.

I heard a slightly different version from Kris Kristofferson on Dateline NBC in an interview. He said he was phoned and told about the recording and went into the studio to listen to it. He said it was a very emotional moment and surreal. He said, he didn't write the song for Janis, but he may as well have because it belongs to her now. Yes, the person below was correct, Kris Kristofferson wrote this. She recorded it for the Pearl album and then died that night. Janis had many songs, she wasn't all signature rasp. If you are interested, look up her Little Girl Blue performance on the Tom Jones Show. She blows all theories away that say she can't sing. She truly has an enormous range and talent that isn't showcased in this song, but is elsewhere. Peace.

The fact that the defense has to honor him possibly tucking the ball and beating them with his legs only helps his passing game. He is an amazing talent and extremely dangerous. Ah, its the old gripe that occasionally rears its head; Bayliss's voice. Many of my friends who are into great bands won't give these guys a chance because of it, which is ridiculous. There are times when it's a little off, but all in all I think his voice adds another key element to this bands' originality and mystique. Really couldn't imagine bridgeless, ocean billy, divisions, 2nd self, the floor and many others being sung by anyone else.

This isn't even arguable. The guy sings sharp and otherwise off-key. Fortunately his voice IS NOT umphs. And more fortunately vocals are 5% of most UM performances. Yes, the band is awesome, they get down, they play their instruments like nobody else, and they have the most creative arrangements and improvs of any band I've ever heard.

Why do I have to sing better than Bayless? Listen, I appreciate the fact that he and Cinninger play well together and he helped found the band and everything. And I love UM. But I'm telling you that they would be even better if they had a lead singer with skills equal to their musicianship. In my mind that's the only thing keeping them from being the greatest band in the world.

The amount of talent wrapped up here in this band (not trying to dis Phish at all, all wicked talented and "set the table" (baba booey to you all) for these guys) is far beyond what anyone else has to offer, IMHO. He was. Robert Service met a man by that name in either a bank or post office and when Service overheard the man's name, he liked it so much he asked McGee if he could use it for a poem and Sam said yes. I guess, though, McGee wasn't too happy with the final result. I lived in Alaska for almost three years and I can say that the folks in the Arctic are a breed apart. Service did write lots of poems about the Yukon even though he was actually Scottish or Irish.
