A masterpiece! The best version of this brilliant film is the Photoplay one, with the wonderful music by Carl Davis. Mr Davis also did a fabulous score for 'Our Hospitality'. I wish he could have done the same for all of Buster's films - Buster was the best, so he deserves the best!

The biggest thing was Buster wasn't scared of Tyson. So many guys, especially Michael Spinks, went into the ring in fear of Tyson and intimidated and were already beaten before the fight even started. Douglas was focused and motivated by his mother's death and executed his gameplan to perfection. When Tyson rocked him, he got up and came back at him...something Mike had never experienced before. Definitely the biggest upset ever in sports history

Even giving Tyson two rounds is being generous. Unfortunately, two of the judges were watching a different fight. After 10 rounds, one had it dead even, and another actually had Tyson winning. Had Tyson stayed on his feet for another 2 rounds, we could have had one of the biggest robberies in boxing history - a travesty. But I concur. An all-time great fight, and an all-time great performance from Douglas, which not even Don King's squalid attempts to have the result overturned could sour.

Thank you, Aurelian. I'm sure you've watched the entire fight as I have. I'd give Tyson two rounds, and that's it -- all the rest to Douglas, who showed no intimidation. It's sad that Douglas (who had genuine potential) could never summon 'Tokyo Buster' again. We've seen that story over & over in sports, haven't we? BTW, another of boxing's 'big men' who could've/should've been much better was Riddick Bowe. Oh well, February 11, 1990 belonged to James Douglas, and no one can take that away.

I couldn't disagree more with those posters below who say this fight wasn't a great one. It was one for the ages, and Douglas just beat Tyson and fought the heroic fight of his life. NOT because Mike wasn't ready, etc. But b/c from the opening bell, Buster fought a smart, quick, powerful type of fight, and used his size and physical attributes. Brilliant. Don't minimize the greatness of it because someone fed you a line about some Tyson excuse.

Hey don't forget in the General when the water tower knocks him off the train he falls in the rush of water and he actually breaks his neck. That injury isnt found till 10 years later in an X-Ray! That is true devotion! The show must go on! He was Stone Face and didnt adjust to the talkies. They paired him with Jimmy Duranty which was the kiss of death for Buster.

It's just a case of Buster needing the money and having to doing things he normally wouldn't do. It's not ALL bad though. Certainly not his best but there are a couple of good Columbia shorts that he did. I actually kind of enjoyed "Pardon my Berth Marks" and of course this one being "Pest from the West" & some of the others do have some good "Buster Moments".

Yes, this is the best copy (unless you've got a region 2 DVD player and can find the MK2 edition). David Shepard has produced two copies of The General to DVD, and although the one with the Alloy Orchestra's synth score has better image quality, the music for this one captures the mood better, I think. At the same time, Alloy's score for Eisentstein's Strike and Vertov's Man With A Movie Camera were excellent and totally fit the films.

Chaplin actually put Keaton in the movie to help Keaton out. At this time in of Keaton's career he was finding work hard to get and Chaplin helped him out. Later in life one of Chaplin's daughters brought their boyfriend to the house and the boyfriend commented on how he was a bigger fan of Keaton to which Chaplin commented "I gave him work." I am not diminishing the abilities of Keaton, he was a fine actor. However, in the grand scheme of things Chaplin, world round is remembered as the better.

you're missing the point. the sentiment of them being old was the IDEA behind this movie, and certainly this scene. they are 'washed up' characters in the movie. besides, they were renowned for their film performances, not stage or vaudeville (like in this scene). so they are making fun of themselves, with remarkable vibrancy. No. I it is more effective that they withold all the laughter from the audience during this scene. It is blocked out, but i assume they are laughing. Then, at the end, you get to hear the audience laughing. I think to hear people laughing after every funny moment can be annoying sometimes.

The way i look at this scene is that there is an audience there, but say the audience's laughter is blocked out for the most part. This is maybe the message of this scene. I think it is more effective that way. Then, at the end, you finally get to hear the last laugh from the audience.
