HEY IDIOT, The term "Heavy Metal" started long before Sabbath. It did not mean "dark lyrics", it was grinding guitar, big drums and screaming vocals. Zeppelin and many others were doing it long before and definately better than B/S. Sabbath (like Kiss) was a band we all used to laugh about. SABBATH SUCKS!! I first heard this together with the "Black Sabbath" song when I played one of my Mom's vinyl record collections back in 1982. I was 6 years old then. It scared the living hell out of me at first. Then I grew up liking it. Thanks to my Mom. She is a closet heavymetal fan. LOL!!! Sabbath is a major influence when I was growing up and playing in bands, even today.

I mean this: 1970,Ozzy wants to rip like its 1980 or 1990 he wants to crank the punk out hard and loud. Screw melody. Chop-chop-chop guitar slashing out three chords. He wants to drive hard, loud, primal - then comes this guitar solo that sounds like a cheesy Led Zep thing. Ozzy in 1970 was driving at what punk would become 5-10 years later but they had to throw in these guitar solos de rigeur. Such an incredible vocal power in a live performance is extremely rare. Janis Joplin, Steve Mariott, Gillan are examples of this raw "r&r power". Maybe Freddie Mercury had an extraordinary voice, but he tended to save his breath a bit during Queen's live performances. This can hardly be said about Ian Gillan, and "Child In Time" is by far his finest (and Purple's) finest hour. A tune as classic and as essentially descriptive of the seventies' monumental rock music as Zep's "Stairway To Heaven".
