It's a video of him presenting three ideas of human nature that have dominated for centuries. He will go on to dubunk them and replace them with a more rational and scientific theory. I have no problem with his voice. I find his lectures creative and analytic. He does very well at dissecting the subjects he talks about and has a refined sense of humour. But that's just how people are different. Some people like this. Some people like watching "gay tom cruise parody"

I'm sure he's really intelligent, and I'm not doubting the diversity and credibility of his sources... but man, his voice is inSUFFERable! Listening to this lecture is an endurance test; I don't like the way he tries to exert an authority on issues that are utterly subjective: Noble? Nasty? Who's to say what constitutes these qualities? I think kramatik84's statement that Pinker "doesn't explain shit" is not justified, but I think his example of "F you up" is a good one. It doesn't quite fit into the categories covered by Pinker in this video (although maybe in his book he goes into more detail). Also, I wonder how the differences came about between "F up", "F over", "F around", "F with", and "F off". And why isn't there a "F on", "F out", or "F in". Maybe those are available for adoption in the future.

i do this too & it works very well. Smooth some vaseline on your lips & gently scrub the area using a toothbrush. Wash or wipe away & then finish off with using a lip balm to moisturize it (& then your lip colour). I agree that after scrubbing, the lips will not only be free of dead skin cells but also appear more pink/red in tone. I love it! :)

I don't think Pinker is arguing that EVERYTHING is innate. Even identical twins can have environmental differences beginning in the womb. One could get a better blood supply and have more brain growth. Or, for some reason the parents may go out of their way to treat the differently. There is a difference between rational capitalism and the system of economic governing that the modern western world seeks to implement upon the lower working classes. It would have been prudent to establish this prior to your tirade which is relevant only within the proper context. "Blank slate" was a philosophical movement related to epistemology and has been thoroughly challenged long before Pinker decided to write his book.

None of that is contradicted by this. The point here isn't that people's personalities are 100% innate and have no variability or mutability. The point is that it is unreasonable to deny, as many do, that there is ANYTHING innate in our personalities. There is quite a bit that is innate, although everything has a range of possible variation. Not many as far as I can tell. B.F. Skinner's behaviourism could equate with something like a blank slate but it's been pretty much consensus for a long time that he overestimated human malleability. Even with that culture still has an enormous influence in development. Twin studies generally ignore things like the cohort effect, neglecting to take into account that adoptees are almost always adopted into the same socioeconomic backgrounds and will live in the same culture.
