If anybody questions anything about a German car here, they should think one more time again. A lot of people should agree that Germans are fantastic engineers and designers. BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, and even Volkswagen are great cars. I love the way they look, their elegant dashboard designs, and the quality of their cars. I would like to have a M5 one day. It will take some time but I'll work on it :)

True. Small turbocharged engines, especially 1.4 twinchargers from VW are really ones of the best in the market now. In the low revs there's grunt like in a big naturally aspirated engine (because of the supercharger) so everyday driving a manual car is very comfortable. High rev end is like in a Civic Type R, lots of revs, lots of power, great noise. Fuel consumption fairly low due to small cubic capacity and limited suction losses. How can anyone want a diesel clatterbox now?

regardless of the displacement rules, the R10 success is due to fact that it doesn't have to come into the pits as often as its petrol driven rivals. In endurance racing its the number of laps you clock in rather than position that matters. So that means the Diesels can stay out longer and put in more laps than the thirsty petrols. Furthermore its predecessor the R8 was already a petrol driven LeMans dominator.

The whole mystery of Audi R10 TDI success is ruthlessly simple. Turbocharged or supercharged petrol engines are only allowed to have a maximum displacement of 4000cc. Diesels are allowed to have 5500cc. And that's all to be said here. If diesels are soooo good, let's race the R10 TDI limited to 4000cc with its petrol rivals and we'll soon reveal the true "TDI Power" :-] Or TDI Weakass :-]

What I guess I'm trying to say is that the design solutions on LMP cars is now about as close to the F1 solutions to the same problems as the rulebooks will allow.

Not exactly F1 - they are built for different purposes, to a different rule-book, but much of the thinking is the same. It all depends on how detailed you want to be in your analysis. For instance, the engine is not F1 legal, the bodywork is not F1 legal, the weight is much too high. However they both use similar suspension arragements, they are both mid-engined RWD layout and open-cockpit, make use of similar aerodynamic solutions at the front and rear of the car etc.

Audi bumped the model number. Something they didn't do when they moved from the R8R & R8C cars (that debut'd at Le Mans in 1999) to the all-conquering R8. The R8 had a direct-injection gasoline V8 (which I believe is now being supplied to other chassis builders), the R10 is fitted with a 5.5l turbocharged diesel. If you get a chance to see it race you should! It's quite the most amazing thing - as with the R8, it's unbelievably quiet.

Well I do like the Veyron i'm not in love with the looks. I love the top gear 250mph run as well but at 1.5 mil I don't like it as much as the reasonably attainable RS4. Yeah most definitely. The marketing here in America actually encourages people to buy automatic cars because of the long highways. But in some cities and areas there are narrower roads so more people drive manual there. Also, there are tons of driving enthusiasts here in America that know that manual is the only way to drive. My friend in Holland said that they also use manual to save gas because petrol is so expensive. I'd love to drive in Austria, awesome roads, beautiful scenery. Cheers

I agree with those who expect a Lambo V10 inside the Audi´s body... having driven a Gallardo just a few weeks ago and still bearing that matchless, aggressive sound in mind, especially while downshifting, there can be nothing else accelerating this convertible than an engine build in Italia. Awesome performer, don´t you think so? If this is not the case, then a great applause to Audi´s sound designers...:-)

Sorry to rain on the parade but that it's the 420 V8 in that particular car. It'll be the first R8R into production hence why it is the engine being tested first. The normally aspirated V10 will follow but hasn't been firm tested in the Roadster yet. The R8R will have the same single exhaust each side as the V10. The quad pipes will be no more!
