The Chinese tradition of specialized training from early childhood predates Communism by centuries. It is usually determined by a parent's observation of the child's tendancies and talents. Jackie Chan was always play acting and starting fights, so he was put in a theater/opera school. Don't confuse Chinese communism with Soviet communism. They made many mistakes, but they are on the path to a government we could take lessons from.

My feeling is that this is tradional for China - raised from birth for perfection in their expertise under a strict Communist Regieme. Remember the little girl at the opening of the Olympics who was not pretty enough? Beautifully performed, but still some sadness...But this a start:-)

this is not a traditional Chinese song. It comes from America, from the region of the Andes Mountain Range, and it is a typical sequence of the area. This performance is, however, modernised like the way that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed it in the 80s. My Chinese culture knowledge is relatively limited, but from what I may say from the performances that I have seen, the performers tend to be relatively emotionless.

This seems to be performed with, movement, but a kind of emotional detachment, they seem a little afraid of smiling. Does anyone know if this is typical of performance in traditional chinese music? or just these ladies look?
