awh, that brings back memories ^_^ I went to duxford so many times growing up, best thing for me isn't the superhanger or that strange new hanger they built for american planes, it's that they open the workshop hangers to the public - there's nothing like the smell of engine oil and watching someone working on a hurricane :)

This was probably the best bomber of its time, it was faster and could carry a higher bombload than the Vulcan, but it was more expensive to run and the wings fatigued as you flew it more, so each one only had a limited flying time. And hell, they are ugly!

It's not letting me post the link, but search Youtube for "First Strike Part 1", which was a documentary about a nuclear strike scenario against the US, produced in about 1979. The B-52D wing shown was my old unit, and there is some excellent operational footage included. Make sure you crank up the volume at about 1:40 for the unique sound of a "tall tail" at MRT. :-)

Eight underpowered turbo jets, quadracycle landing gear, up to thirty-six feet of wing flex - yep, they could be a bit of a handful. :-) Nothing like the sound of water injected J-57s at MRT, though. The only remaining BUFFs, the "H" models, have TF-33 fans, which, while having more thrust, don't have the same visceral quality. For an example of a "Dog" model BUFF like this one in full song, see the following link at about 1:40. FWIW, that was my old wing, filmed about a year before my arrival.

I served on B-52D's just like this one, except I never saw one that clean. :-) Nice to see one of the few survivors. I have visited the B-52D at the AF Museum at Wright-Pat and the one that sits near the entrance to Orlando Airport, which used to be McCoy AFB. The Buff at WPAFB is inside and well cared for but the one in Orlando sits outside and is looking a little faded.

Sorry but you clearly have no idea whatsoever about the way things at Bruntingthorpe work. It's not a rich mans club or anything like that. Everyone on site, no matter what group they are part of, invests more time and effort than money. The open days let the public help fund the jets, the clubs simple could not do it without their help.

Last time I saw a Hunter and a Lightning was at the Classic Jets show here at Cranfield ages ago - the 2-seat Lightning is still there, took a clip of it the other day so will post soon. Great sound the Hunter revving up and in flight... the blue note I think they call it, the wind whistling through the gun ports.

I love and hate Cosford - I can't imagine anything as important as these large UK aircraft being scrapped at Duxford. What s/w do you use to make this slideshow? I use WMM coz it is free and usually works. I must get to Cosford with my digicam... last time was on our honeymoon, did I get it in the neck!

I worked on F-4's for 3 years in the Marines. I worked in Com/Nav shop. I even finagled a back seat hop in '68 doing a 45 degree rocket/bomb attacks at a range in Florida called Pinecastle. Absolutely unforgettable.

Great plane, great crews, cunningham, olds, etc Best Jet fighter ever i dont care it wasnt the fastest, or the most lethal, or the most produced, or even that it got the nickname 'double ugly' for a reson. It did everything asked of it, and then some. It could take a beating, and then return the favor, in one mission, and at one time there were more in service than phillips head screwdrivers.

F111 Belly landing!

F111 Belly Landing at (Amberley?) after one of the wheels fell off during take off. This Aircraft circles for three hours burning off fuel before landing. Quite why he did'nt use the famous 'Dump and burn' option, I don't know. I hope that they re-build her! Vive Le Aardvark!!!!

Never seen a belly landing that has ended badly. All credit to the pilots, but really they know what to do and these things are not as dangerous as most people think. Case in point - I have never seen a belly landing with anyone with as much as a scratch. Most pilots will tell you these landings are pretty routine.

Funny that you mention that - I have a newpaper clipping that has Ray Manzareck saying that they wanted to "kick him out" The plots come up for renewal every 30 years or so and as Ray says - "He has been a bad tenent and in death just as in life nothing has changed" The real problem is the people who have no respect and write grafitti, leave trash, etc.. Bonjour, J'ai vu un programme télé relatant les dernières 24 heures de Morrison. Avant sa mort, il souffrait de problèmes respiratoires et cardiaque, lié avec son abus d'alcool ( et de drogues ). La veille au soir, durant une soirée intime avec Pam, il prit pour la première et dernière fois de l'héroine, cherchant à repousser encore une fois ses limites. Son expérimentation d'héroine a provoqué un arrêt respiratoire et cardiaque. Il venait d'entrer dans la légende. RIP Jim 3-7-1971

How not to preserve an aircraft: Just park it up outside and don't bother covering the engines up, leave loads of spaces for birds to nest and there you go: A heap of concorde shaped scrap in fifteen years time. Also, a few shots of concorde in happier times. I could'nt find many shots on the net so I had to put up with these.

When she went into retirement, it was really the first time Mankind took a step backwards in aviation instead of forwards. Concorde was the most advanced engineering accomplishments in the history of aviation and now she is lost. Rest in peace Concorde!

Wow, way not to preserve her indeed. It's a damn shame, I want to cry when I see how she has been neglected. I thought G-BOAG was getting bad treatment in seattle, but it's being treated like royalty comparend to what i see here. damn Airbus for no longer backing her, Damn Mike Bannister for not pushing harder, and Damn BA for not finding another way. this was a great piece of history that's now just a "piece"

"British Airways" has stood in the way of any attempt to return concorde to flight...As a former concorde pilot said recently they are behaving like "Vandals" says it all really...the only example worth considering for return to flight is one in france...Powerede up 3 times a week..just incase..I hope so !!

Just for information - G-BOAC is in very good condition @ Manchester, and is being looked after very well by the preservation people. They plan to build a structure over her to keep out the weather. Tours are £12 to £30 pp and in the VIP tour you get a 2 hour technical walkround & 10 minutes in the cockpit in a grout of no more than 4 people. I got to sit in the pilots seat for 10 mins - Way shiney!!!!

Its worth taking the tour. I went to the one in Filton, Bristol and was certainly a good experience. Its strange but you really feel that your looking at a modern (in design) yet dated (in furnishings) aircraft. Definately impressive for its age though.

Excellent Video! And a great tribute to what I think is best aircraft design ever built. Always wanted to fly in one when I was in the RAF. Never did. The closest I ever got was the one at Cosford and they would'nt let us have a look inside.

My first "jet" flight at age 10 was on a VC10 from Manchester to JFK in Dec 1976 and yes it was BOAC. Awesome apart from all of the toilets packing up halfway to final destination. Easy to look back and laugh now.

Thank you for your kindness, sadly, no photos could help my project, i'm working from the Jane's 1968-1969, which gives a lot of datas about of the aerodynamics. Anyway, i would see gladly any photos of her, hope that you will post them here again!

It goes very nice with the hippy interior, which is whole new for me, because at this side of the iron curtain, it was only possible to see the soviet sister of the Vc10, the Ilyushin -62, which was also a great plane, but had a much more ugly interior...

I'm a student of the Tec. University of Budapest, Aircraft Engineering, and i've got the task from the university to recalculate the aerodynamics of that beauty. That video doesn't give the solution for my calculates, but with the authentic music it gives me a nice view from the era, and from her rule in the 60's aviation. So, many thanks for the video!!

Thanks for the memory. I still have my BOAC Junior Jet Club Log Book and Wings from my first Heathrow to JFK flight at age 11 back on October 22, 1968. The VC-10 was (is) a beautiful airplane.

Wonderful to see the VC 10 again. My wife and I worked as a Steward and Stewardess for BOAC in the early 1970's and this was one of the actual aircraft we flew on. Great memories

What would be great is a video walkaround, maybe with someone from the museum doing a little narrative. I'd love to see more of the cabin and learn more about what routes this VC10 operated. Either that or I'd like to see Vanessa Kensington and Felicity Shagwell go-go dancing on the wing...
