The name of the movie: "Duets" (2000) And this IS Paltrow's voice. This song, along with a duet she did with Huey Lewis, were recorded and did quite well in Australia. This song went to #3, the duet went all the way to #1. It's a great movie. Paltrow is just SO hot in it!

You are quite right...nothing could EVER replace Kim Carne's original version of this! How many weeks at number one? I think it was like nine weeks or more. That speaks for itself, doesn't it? :) I still say Paltrow did a super job on a REALLY tough song. It really has grown on me!! :)

I'm aware of Latino sensitivity on this issue regarding overall hemisphere versus country (U.S.A.). I've had polite conversations with Latinos on this exact issue. When someone from Venezuela is asked about nationality they proudly say "Venezuelan," and people from the U.S. say "American." It's not meant to offend Latinos.

She is truly an all around talent. What I respect about her is that she did not try to capitize on all of her talent. Her voice is actually better than alot of top singers out there. She turned down a recording contract after filming duets because she did not want to known as an actor-turned-singer. She made the right choice!

Here she is really "Knabe" :) And at last we have this wonderful production on DVD (I am sure it is the best Fidelio on video)! All other artists are there also very good in singing and acting. Highly recommended!

I think this performance has just be re-released on DVD by DG. Jones has always been rather controversial with critics, but I think many of them do applaud her performances, including those in recent years. For example, her Queen of Hearts in Munich last year was enthusiastically greeted by the great majority of reviewers (of both the live performances and the DVD recently released on Medici Arts). I'm glad that such a fine artiste is still going strong in her seventies.

I have always marvelled at this fabulous artist. Critics unanimously, unfailingly and eternally crucified her for every performance she gave. I learned early on to trust my own ear and to ignore them. Get Mike Richter's CD-ROM that has the '76 Boulez Ring on it -- her Gotterdammerung Brunnhilde that year was wonderful. I always thought that if the Sun could sing, it would sound just like Gwyneth Jones. And she was passionate about music, she was electrified by it. I've always loved her.

Jones had a pianissimo when she needed it. Her voice was (is?) truly remarkable in how well she could control it, given the immense size of her instrument. And when she opened up the throttle it was truly THRILLING. Hardly anyone comes close in pure visceral excitement.

What is amazing here is how little she has to go into chest register to sing this aria. There are the usual slight pitch issues at the center of her tone, but all in all, a great effort, and where did those pianissimos come from? Wow! It proves that a big voice is required for this role, but subtlety as well.
