The IndyMac bust was not exactly show seamless coverage when the FDIC took it over. Once IndyMac went bust and those scenes were on the TV, of the long lines and cops roughing up people, I guess any hint of trouble scared people away from the other banks.

I dont think I can call this market as competitive for banks. The reason why so many people pull out of WAMU even if they were under the FDIC limits was because of public fear. We fear what we dont understand and a lot of people dont understand what FDIC insured means. Therefore people feared that they would loose all their money even if they were under the FDIC limits.

I think the banks would be forced to absorb all or most of the cost as an expense. In a competitive environment,they could not charge fees directly or give a lower interest rates. But if WAMU could have told their depositors that "your accounts are secure, we have bought additional FDIC insurance,in excess of $100,000, you can hold $500,000 FDIC protected at our bank,they would have done so to keep their depositors. Banks don't have the option now. They are locked in to the $100,000 amount.

If the FDIC was to insure more than $100K, banks would have to pay a higher fee for it. Banks would then turn around and pass on the expenses on to the consumer. It would also mean that the FDIC would have to put up more money if a bank failed and there was no other institution willing to buy it. If anyone has more than $100K, you have the option to deposit money up to the insurance amount in different banks/accts in order to be protected.

Most medium size business need more than $100,000 to meet monthly payrolls and purchase agreements. They need to increase the FDIC amount from $100,000. $100,000 is way too low, and will cause more bank runs like at WAMU.

Big mistake. Any additional money from the federal government is not a guarantee, but rather a loan, which will only be made subject to the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury. Further, that the loan is to be made at "current market yields." What do you suppose would happen to US Treasury yields during a true emergency? I can imagine a few scenarios where they might skyrocket, and this would serve to compound the difficulty of keeping the FDIC fund solvent.

Just keep your cash in the bank, as long as it's under $100K. Everyone knows that from the get go. Bank runs are temporary and emotionally based by their nature. You should always have anything above $100 Grand in a second account, third account, ect. If you don't know that by now you MBA's, then you will get what you deserve, which is 50 cents on the dollar, if you're lucky. All you had to do was look at the average increase of salaries with the average cost of a home since 1992 and this discrepency alone should have told you something doesnt add up. The fact is they just counted up all the accounts with deposits over $100k and made that statement - the real fact is that this number will be lower b/c many of these accounts with >100K are trusts, POD and IRA, thus $250k for IRAs, and POD accounts can be $100K for each benificiary to the deposit even though John Doe has $1M in deposits.

Snazzy intro, Kurt. Very well produced. May be a touch long though. 15-20s is appropriate for an intro with your length vids. The music has some good break-points you might want to test chopping at. I like the whole lot; it's just that it may seem long, once the novelty wears off. But that's just my one opinion.

I was just thinking about these banks and how it mirrors my theory on the stock market. It all looks good if its skyrocketing up with everyone and their mother getting credit for homes,but when they cant pay it comes crashing down.Thats why I think all the blame should be on the credit bureaus who give higher scores to people that have many credit cards and keep balances than people who pay their shit off. I hate to say it but we are going towards a socialist government whether we like it or not

It's a bit more complex than that. The FDIC will sell off the bank and all of its assets. All insured funds will be paid regardless of the revenue generated by liquidation of the bank. Additional "profit" generated by the sale will then be distributed equally among those who had over 100k ($250K based on the new legislation).

There is $6.84 Trillion in bank deposits. $2.60 Trillion of that is uninsured. Total cash on hand at banks is $273.7 Billion. If uninsured depositors start asking for cash on the barrelhead, things could get ugly real fast. The vast majority of those uninsured deposits probably are corporate accounts. Anyone with a corporate account at a distressed institution better do something about it pronto unless employees will be happy with a delayed paycheck of 50 cents on the dollar.
