It's not cultural behavior, I'm talking about the differnces between human behavior and human nature. Those are entirely different things and I was relating it to your statement about the social structures being a relative matter to behavior. Either way, it's subject to opinion, and personally things never go to the "extreme" outcomes as the media tells you so. It always stops at the threshold and holds its place. It's a damn cycle.

products. Japanese economy is entirely based on the american market through the triangulation with china. Being japanese society so rigid, I fear the effects will be disastrous, like 4 years ago. The actual Taro Aso government, being extreme right wing (japanese neocon) think the solution is in more patriotism and more work. Old generation that is stopping the new one to become leader in economics, politics and culture. I forsee harsh time here. Luckly I'm leaving for the old europe soon, UK.

I can't see how reasonably your being half japanese half american collide with natural and cultural behavioural theory. First of all you are not half but double because, in normal condition, you get the best of both countries (you have to be critical of both cultures to accept them). I'm not saying that Japan is the worst country I'm just saying that is imploding due to cultural issues. My worry is that with the subprime rate collapse, japan won't be able to sell anymore cars and tv and other

By: shamisenten. on 23 Nov 08, 05:57:10
Actually, I'm half japanese and half american, I know both sides of the social structure. This will all collide in the issue of human behavior vs human nature. Which side you believe in more accounts to what your answer will be. I'm not trying to defend the country, the whole "national pride" is unfamiliar to my way of life. I could care less, but you're overdramatizing the matter. There are far worse countries than Japan. Yes, it's more government regulated (half and half), but some places

their life being able to accept diversities avversities and being tolerant. Unfortunately this positive trend hasn't passed to the following generation. Violence in itself is not present in Japan, but social violence is a huge problem. I understand your national pride, but this should not interfer with your ability to be critical of your country. I know for jaapnese it's hard to hear criticism from foreigns, but I'm sure you can do an effort :=). Don't idealize. Ps Yes I misunderstood frizzy

Even the official statistic shows an increasing number of young people in the charts. More and more dropping from schools and university it's a sign of more and more demotivated generation. The point is that japanese culture is not able to regenerate itself and it's virtually isolated having developed its stronger and stronger social protocol. Success of Japan in the 80s was tha big numbers of japanese people during ww2 came in contact with other population. They had a more globalized view of

I'm sorry but individuality is one thing and personality is another. Individuality is more related to your natural being, and personality is the interaction between the "social" and individuality. Japanese social structure is fermely controlled by old people less tolerant towards new generations, people outside the box and outsider. In Japan there are 35000 official suicides, and at least the same amount not recorded. Of these not recorded at least 50 percent are people aged between 20 and 35.

By: shamisenten. on 23 Nov 08, 04:05:39
I'm from Japan, currently residing in California but I do visist as well. I've known friends who committed suicides and saw one first handed, and I know how fucked up the social structures are. I've attended school there as well, well over 10 years. Indivuduality is not a product of social structure as it is the institutions that you are placed in for the survival of yourself and people you love. You should try refraining to GROUPING people (i.e. Republican statement), you lose all credulity.

no! It's the japanese educational system and society that create these nerds. Being slightly out of the norm in Japan means being out of society and things precipitates to the point that many commit suicide
