iphone is good for it's user friendly interface with multi touch...there is no other phone that works so well w/o needing a stylus. on top of that it's an ipod and vast and vast of apps developed by ppl to enrich the device. if all you care about on the phone is how many pixel camera is or those flashy feature then iphone isn't for you. it's for ppl who wants great user interface and good quality

It was surely in development at this time, but Apple has a policy on not commenting on unreleased products (do a Wiki search for "the osborne effect" to see why). What is ironic is that apple DID pre-announce the iPhone in January 2007, six months before its release. WHY?? Because the iPhone's existence would be revealed by their application to get approval by the FCC. Apple did not want to leave such a HUGE revelation to a boring FCC application and did a big reveal of it in Jan 2007.

The original iPhone wasn't so mart. No 3G, for a year there weren't down loadable apps, and it was nearly impossible to type emails on that screen in vertical mode which was, and still is, the only way apple lets you do it. The 3G is much better though.

I've tried both OpenSUSE and Ubuntu, and I'll keep trying new versions of these distros cause I'd like to know when these things improve. I've till this day always had to apt-get the nVidia-config panel and open that in su-mode from console to change anything to my likening. Granted that didn't require manually editing xorg.conf, but I happen to have 4 monitors on 2 GPU's and a tablet and that surely is too much for a userfriendly settings interface on Linux.

Good thing that NeXTStep made OS X so much better. It's all there. And more. Still, a lot of people seem to think that Macs are not a good deal. The PC manufacturers taught people over years to buy computers over hardware feature lists, since there was no difference in the software anyway. As long as Linux geeks still believe it is normal to expect your end-user to sudo kate xorg.conf to setup a second monitor PROPERLY, Linux won't make a chance on the desktop market. I'd like it to be that way too, but its simply not the case. On my Mac I can plug in any monitor while its already on, press detect and drag the squares to arrange it to my likening. A 3 y/o could do it. So fair enough, yes, a 3 y/o is dumber than you, well, have fun feeling elite.

Actually he was right, too right in this case. He correctly said that the PC market would move into the professional space, this indeed occurred. The problem is that NeXT could never hit the price targets that would get them the 50% that they were looking for. If they misread anything, it was the price sensitivity of the market (my guess is that they didn't misread it, they were getting a bit desperate). NeXT's biggest problem is that they showed up too late with tech that was too early.

Remember, this is spring 1990, when the choices were Macintosh System 6, windows 3.0, SunOS 4 (BSD-based, not System V, pre-Solaris) plus OpenLook, Motif 1.0, NeWS, or X-Windows. What immediately hits me as I'm watching this, is that it's the first time I see Steve Jobs being so absolutely wrong about something, and arguing with the usual passion and conviction. Was NeXT so hungry that they misinterpreted the data in their favor, to desperately target a seemingly substantial market? Whatever it is, I can't help but be sympathetic to those guys - their workstation was years beyond their competitors and the programming frameworks were a small slice of heaven, for the 90's.

The only thing that prevents it is the IBM PC had an open architecture and many "clones" were produced. Still IBM's architecture prevails. Microsoft succeeded through great cockups of others: Digital, IBM and Apple. In the early days Microsoft (too) portrayed IBM as the evil empire. Funny how things change.

But my point is that they didn't even release Windows until after the Macintosh was released, and Microsoft didn't have hardly any power until 1995, over 10 years after this keynote. So Steve Jobs would literally have to be a fortune teller to predict that Windows would take over the industry, because there's no way to predict that. Ridiculing Jobs for seeing IBM as the problem in 1984, not 1995, is an ignorant thing to do.
