If all prices are down, a dollar goes further but they still make less money, and the farmer wont have the credit to buy another farm if they default. Farms borrow on the assumption their goods are worth X-amount in the future. If deflation happens even just slightly, the farmer can be put in a tough spot, like people with ARMs: They can afford it, but just barely. HOWEVER, I didn't say we a central bank or the Fed is needed. In/Deflation can happen under any econ policy, free market or not.

Poor example. With deflation all prices go down so your money goes farther. The 100K was an inflated price to begin with and may be only worth 50K. Does the bank want to lose that much leverage? No. It will restructure the loan or take the loss. The farmer can just buy another farm for the new price. Let the free market determine that and not central banks. End the FED!!!

Apparently our leaders dont watch Ducktales... Oh wait, that right, they are doing this on PURPOSE. The FED is not part of the gov, they are an independent bank that loans money out to the gov and other big companies. They control the value of the money and hence they control AMERICA and every aspect of our lives. We are slaves to the banking corporations of this world... The central banks could have a standing offer of a very high value, say $10,000 per ounce of gold. That would get some people to sell off whatever they own, but it would put a stable value to the money. If people felt that the country's central bank was doing a poor job, and devaluing the money, they would trade the paper money for gold. If the bank did a good job, they'd trade their gold back for paper money. As for deflation, I'd rather invest than sit and get a low 1% annual deflation.

And the risk with a gold-backed currency is Deflation: If there is any disruption in the price of gold, or production of gold. ALL of the mined gold in existence, even at 1000/oz is nowhere near the current value of the US. The inability to print money (in a conrolled fashion) when needed means the economy grows slowly. Don't take this as an endorsement of the Fed--I think a responsible policy, inflationary or gold-backed, is a good solution but want to make everyone aware of pro/con of both.

Say you make 5k per month, but with deflation, say you make 4k a month now. You still owe 100k. Farmers were most vulnerable to this. Banks and creditors have the advantage when you are at high risk of default from this simple mechanism. How do you think John D Rockefeller and JP Morgan got so rich? In a controlled inflationary policy, it benefits debtors. Say you make 5k a month and in 10 years you're making 5.5k a month from inflation. You still owe only 100k on your property.

This is definitely a great and simple definition of what hyperinflation can do. However, hyperinflation is the extreme example. A non-inflation gold-backed policy has its risks too. Without an inflatonary policy you can't grow the money supply or the economy. For example, If you run a business w/a 100k mortgage and prices for your goods goes down due to deflation, you make less in terms of dollar value, but you still owe the same dollar value.

I appreciate the criticism. I have addressed this a few times in the comments. The cartoon demonstrates a single phenomenon; namely inflation. Often when teaching a lesson, relating factors are disregarded in order to clarify the understanding of the point at hand. the lesson is not diminished, just isolated for clarification.

I appreciate the lesson the episode of Ducktales was teaching, but to oversimplify it to that extreme is silly in and of itself. I don't agree with a lot of the monetary policies, but I know it's a lot more complicated than just multiplying money.

Please watch my Milton Friedman videos closely. By the way, we had financial panics in 1837, 1857, 1873, 1890, and 1907 while on the gold standard and BEFORE the federal reserve even existed. It was an active central bank and FDIC insurance that prevented this for 70 years after the Great Depression.

The truth is both Rogers and interviewer need to brush up on their economic history. The cause of the Depression was massive expansion of credit and it was prolonged by counterproductive interventionist measures by Hoover and Roosevelt administrations. Murray Rothbard nails it in his book "America's Great Depression."

I'm a great admirer of Jim Rogers, but the interviewer has correctly caught him in a contradiction. Rogers agrees with Friedman's view that the Great Depression was mostly caused by tight money policy by the Fed. But if that's so, why condemn the current Fed for flooding the markets with cash in an attempt to reflate the economy?

i think jim rogers is right in everything except believing that the depression was due to a "liquidity crisis". the great depression was a result of an artificial credit expansion by the fed reserve and the attempts by the govt to prop up prices, ie stop the market liquidating the bad assets.
