Well all countries have has some failures and duds: 1) USAF: earlier F4 Phantom II - leaked, engines trailed smoke, no gun, not agile as Russian types. F15 - oversized/expensive, built for a non-existent threat (mig-25). A larger F16 would have been more sensible. F111 - Failed in it's intended role as all-weather fighter. F104 - Built to poor requirements. USSR - B4 Bison, Tu 22 - Had pathetic range. Japan - F2/F16 fsx - 5X the price of a regular F16 with only marginal improvements.

By disaster I mean't an economic and military disaster. It's development was protacted and way over-cost. Wing-cracks kept the fleet grounded until brand new wings were later installed. The USA has made many greater combat aircraft but cargo transports have been poor (the C130 being the big exception). The new C-17 is an awsome aircraft if it weren't for it's cost and delays. It was designed to land near the front-line but NO general would ever risk losing such an expensive plane to enemy fire.

A disaster? But is that the C-5 had accidents during it's tests, although that, today it flies with no matter what... It happened to the first british harrier, the B-1 Bomber, the first USAF F-16 and the F-15, don't forget the F-14 too!!! Actually the C-5 was a disaster for the USAF. It suffered massive cost over-runs and later was grounded for much of it's life due to wing cracks. Every country has produced some black sheep and the C-5 was one of the worst. It was also involved in a nasty senate haering and they demanded to know why the USAF didn't pick a modified 747. The USAF got stuck with the Starlifter which lacked sufficient volume due to poor requirements. The three finest milary transports would be: C130, Il-76, An-124.

i doubt. it was built for cargo transports, and mriya's services are in a huge demand all over the globe. i don't see neither economic nor engineering reason for building a passenger prototype....

i think the front nose of the antonov an-225 was a copy off of the 747. most of the russian antonovs and tupelov planes structures look pretty similar to the boeing jets IMO

The city is Christchurch New Zealand. The approach to the airport is over not very populated land. I'm only telling you what I saw and experienced. It was far and above the largest and loadest thing I have seen. I wouldn't have even bothered looking up if it was a 747. It's engines didn't produce the high piched sound of the AN-225 it had a very low and earth shaking pitch. No one I know has seen or heard of it and that is why I was compelled to mention it. Sorry lost the 1st comment. Back in 1996 my truck got a flat just south of Christchurch airport. I got out to change it and heard an unusual sound. I looked south and saw something very large coming in to land. It flew right overhead at about 200 ft. It had 4 sets of 2 engines per wing and 4 on the tail.The engines were rectangular and incredibly load. It was easily twice the wingspan of a 747 and was akin to having a city fly over your head. The sound was absolutely deafening.

Continued. There were 8 wheels per landing gear 2 sets per wing and one in front. The plane was painted flat black with no markings on it but must have been American as they ferry stuff down to Antarctica from there. I'm not one to be frightened but this was the most horrendous and intimidating thing I had ever witnessed. Definately black ops and it has never been seen or heard of since. If any of you plane buffs have any idea what it was I woud love to find out.

the an-225 carries almost 2x the payload. (550,000 lbs vs 270,000 lbs) . A more comparable plane is the an-124 which still carries more than the C-5 (330,000 lbs)
