It is a problem alright. I think its probably the biggest problem I have especially because I tend to not use these annoying things like ":)" or "lol" after making a tongue-in-cheek comment. But the Irish sense of humour is based on the idea that everyone is open to a really good insult, slagging is the national past-time! Which is why this Pitch'n'Putt film works so well.

Well, obviously "Irish" isnt a race. Besides I was taking the piss. Its what we Irish do, but you'd know that as you like us so much! Anyway,its a very funny film. Joyce reminds me of Dr. Statham from Greenwing TV series ("oh my fucksie" etc). Nice to see some shameless taking the piss combined with intelligent dialogue. Joyce was a filthy fucker, and a Dub, so I think the use of profanity is really well played out. Obviously its a caricature.

I know it isn't meant to be, but this is actually quiet funny in parts. The script, although somewhat different from the finished production, makes for great reading for its technical exactness. It would be great if this was re-made by David Lynch. Although it would be difficult to find someone to fill Buster Keaton's shoes.

These ancient empty streets, populated with ghosts lead upstairs through hallways to a past that can only recall an inevitable impending death that the character played by Buster Keaton seems to be on the cusp of.

I love Samuel Beckett and his work. Though this piece (i have found) is not as notable as all his other, it is my personal favourite. I think Allan Rickman does a phenomenal job in this particular rendition of 'Play' also. I just hate having to watch it, alone at 1am for a drama assignment. They're just a little creepy.

JrWofulrabbit- That's a slight contradiction, Making it your own IS interpreting it. I'm a playwright and expect my work to be re-imagined by directors and actors. It's just how it works. If plays are interpreted differently and as you said made their own, then plays wil stagnate. Beckett contributed a lot to theatre (though I have to say he's at the very bottom of my favourite practitioners list!), but once written, a playwright cannot be over protective of their work. Its not how its done

Actually not even close to the stage directions. Script actually calls for the close up (or spotlight in the case of the stage) to first be on the speaker, but once repeated the close up/spotlight is not to be on the face of the speaker. I suppose that when your only stage direction is to blurt the lines as fast as you can, there is no need for an actor to interpret... Gotta love Beckett.

Yeah exactly, we watched this clip, but especially for students and it has subtitles that said about 'play' and about beckett. It said 'Samuel Beckett did not want his actors to interpret his script' or something like that. He wanted them to take his words, and make them their own...At least I think I'm correct lol

download a program called SUPER, it converts any sound and video file. Go to google and type in "Download youtube videos" Click on the top link, then it'll tell you how to download(which is just copying the URL into a box and pressing download). After youve downloaded both SUPER and the video, open SUPER. There's a box that you can drag files into. Drag the video into this box. After that there are converter pulldown menu tabs at the top which define output etc Select then convert.

interesting how this interpretation seems to be a commentary on "big tobacco" (hospital items, gurneys, sharps containers, gowns, etc., then that ashtray @ the end with the cigarette butts in the shape of a swastika. it's like the director is saying "look @ where you'll end up. they've planned this for you. cherish your breath." true, but it's a detour from the "calcutta joke." love beckett, but this version of "breath" leads into the director's mind/opinions a bit much. still good, though.

There is an older and better version of this from the 60's. Don't ask me why but I just know this is not quite right. I'm sure there are meant to me no "Upright" images on the stage and this has the legs of the trolley and it gives a strong impression of "Hospital" which i don't remember in the older version. The sigh/breath is suppled by Keith Allen, for those of you who do not know this British actor, he has a reputation of being an arrogant hammy bastard. Still, I love Beckett

A lot of you missed the meaning, Beckett was at heart a nihilist. He is illustrating this by showing what the life of a man at the core really is. He breaths in he breaths out, in a world of absurdity and random, then ends in darkness as in nothing

Yes, Smut. According to wikipedia, the director of "Oh! Calcutta" sort of 'ruined' the original production of Breath by adding naked bodies to the garbage strewn on the stage. Beckett was upset by this, I think because he wanted to make a point that "Oh! Calcutta" was garbage, and hence, he made a companion play starring, um, garbage. However, the breath - it is still very chilling. Even in this bizarre vignette, he seems to attempt evoke strong imagery.

Since the first and last sounds of the piece are supposed to be the cry of a baby (guess this director thought he/she could improve upon Beckett), my guess is that it is representative of a child being born into poverty and squalor. Just a guess. But it could also be a child being born into mankind's garbage. Makes sense to me.

I'm curious as to where you're from and what you mean by the term "snuff". In the U.S., "snuff" (aside from the tobacco product) is a genre of pornography that depicts the actual on-camera death of one of the actors, which to my knowledge never happened in "Oh! Calcutta!". I suspect you mean "smut", since it was a revue of sex-related sketches containing onstage nudity.

I almost watched this last night before I went to bed...I'm glad I waited until now. The film itself isn't creepy. It's the actual sound of the play's namesake that is kind of disturbing. I've wanted to see this play since I read about it being the shortest ever written in the Guinness Book of World Records. At 32 seconds, I believe it.

I believe the meaning behind this short play is that it is the rubbish that is breathing. It's symbolic of how man is attached to objects in the world. for instance, how a man is attached to a car. This brings up the idea of materialism. It is rubbish and there are cries because it shows how man kills the things he loves. This piece is a direct representation of Oscar Wilde's quote: "yet each man kills the thing he loves."
