Reply to hobatu More like the USSR collapsed one year after this shuttle's maiden flight, and the funding for this (military-purpose) project went along with it. The technology could be reasonable, even if copied from the USA somewhat. Don't underestimate Russian technology.

Quite little is actually known about the Buran. I doubt it's superior to shuttles of the time. Humans have never used it in orbit. That should tell you something about the confidence Soviets had in this technology. Not reliable enough to but people in it.

The Buran isn't really monumentally different from the orbiter, and it doesn't have decades of operational experience backing it up. Buran would have all of the shuttle's issues, as well as the issues the shuttle program has already solved. It's not a viable alternative.

Sorry, I'm looking at NASA's site right now and they're saying it's 2011. That's a conservative best-scenario estimate assuming all the modules are completed on time and all shuttle repairs and preparation occurs on time with no flight delays and no bad weather or other setbacks. That's not likely to happen given the history of poor international coordination and the list of last-minute problems with the modules and spacecraft that take months to fix. Congress will still cut funding in 2010.

no it is 2010 that is why they are retiring the shuttle in 2010. they do not need a new shuttle type vehicle because once the ISS is complete the shuttle will retire. The ISS has to be complete by 2010 because congress will cut its funding then.

The American space shuttle has lifted most of the modules into orbit. Especially the solar panels and the robot arm, which the Soyuz capsule can't take into space or assemble. A shuttle-type vehicle is needed for a couple of modules left and the second ISS robotic arm. From what I read the earliest ISS completion date is 2011. Parts are being delayed.

Soyuz can and has helped build the ISS. It built Mir, and it built the ISS when the Shuttle was grounded. You don't need a space shuttle to "place the rest of the solar panels on" I mean how did Mir get built? You need to read up on space vehicles before coming here and trying to make up stuff. If they did need a shuttle it would be cheaper to just refit the US shuttles which are mission ready and not one thats never been in space. The ISS completion date is 2010 so they dont need a new shuttle.

It was not built to help go to the moon, it would not be able to help. If the Russian space agency was going to go to the moon why re buy, redesign, rebuild/finish building a spacecraft not design to do what you were building it for. Just build a new one. I also doubt the RSA would have enough money to do all that and help build the ISS. Buran will probably never fly again. Ever.

FORZION - Yes, two are destroyed. One is owned by someone else but it can be re-purchased (though I'm not sure how likely that is to happen). However, there is another model which is 40% complete and there are a couple of full-blown mock-up models which can be converted into fully functioning ones for less than 2 billion rubles. However, only one or two are necessary. Using Buran as a shuttle replacement for 5-10 years would greatly help while countries work separately on their moon programs.

1) It's reusable. Soyuz isn't, even though it's come a long way since the late 60's. 2) Buran can carry more weight into space than the American space shuttle. Buran would be very useful for carrying up the remaining modules for the International Space Station. Russia's planned Klipper can't do that. It's strictly a space taxi like Orion. 3) Some of the ISS modules need an orbiter to install them, they can't all be strapped onto Energia and attach themselves like the ATV.

I don't believe that Buran is finished. Now that Russia is coming out of its economic depression and cooperating with the European Space Agency, several top engineers within both the Russian and European Space Agency have proposed reviving Buran as a possible future shuttle for the International Space Station. A couple of the shuttles are still salvageable and the Energia rocket is just too efficient to give up on. Unlike Americans, Europeans hate wasting good engineering.

Yes it is, but it is a Russian built aircraft. I do not know your familiarity with Antonov aircraft, but I know the ones I have been around(4,2 different models) whom operate in the USA still have russian gauges. As a matter of fact, only one of the planes I am familiar with even had the warning "voices", and it was in russian.

Dear pbaron! the thing is that Bartók originally composed this piece for solo piano, than 10 years later it was transcribed for violin with piano accompaniment which by the way is neither rare nor surprising! :-) And transcribing a violin piece for cello is no magic! :-)

An amazing aircraft. It is a shame that Antonov's future is uncertain now that Ukrain and Russia have an antagonistic relationship. I hope the mostly Russian people of the Ukrianian port of Sevastapol is not the flashpoint of a new war. I have heard rumers that the Russian air-transport industry is slowing weaning themselves off of Ukrainian components on current and future projects and Antonov planes will soon be entirely Russian and built by Ilyushin.

An-225 was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau for the Soviet space program to airlift the Energia rocket's boosters and the Buran space shuttle. Founder of the Antonov Design Bureau was the Russian aircraft designer Oleg Konstantinovich Antonov. Well all countries have has some failures and duds: 1) USAF: earlier F4 Phantom II - leaked, engines trailed smoke, no gun, not agile as Russian types. F15 - oversized/expensive, built for a non-existent threat (mig-25). A larger F16 would have been more sensible. F111 - Failed in it's intended role as all-weather fighter. F104 - Built to poor requirements. USSR - B4 Bison, Tu 22 - Had pathetic range. Japan - F2/F16 fsx - 5X the price of a regular F16 with only marginal improvements.

By disaster I mean't an economic and military disaster. It's development was protacted and way over-cost. Wing-cracks kept the fleet grounded until brand new wings were later installed. The USA has made many greater combat aircraft but cargo transports have been poor (the C130 being the big exception). The new C-17 is an awsome aircraft if it weren't for it's cost and delays. It was designed to land near the front-line but NO general would ever risk losing such an expensive plane to enemy fire.

A disaster? But is that the C-5 had accidents during it's tests, although that, today it flies with no matter what... It happened to the first british harrier, the B-1 Bomber, the first USAF F-16 and the F-15, don't forget the F-14 too!!! Actually the C-5 was a disaster for the USAF. It suffered massive cost over-runs and later was grounded for much of it's life due to wing cracks. Every country has produced some black sheep and the C-5 was one of the worst. It was also involved in a nasty senate haering and they demanded to know why the USAF didn't pick a modified 747. The USAF got stuck with the Starlifter which lacked sufficient volume due to poor requirements. The three finest milary transports would be: C130, Il-76, An-124.

i think the front nose of the antonov an-225 was a copy off of the 747. most of the russian antonovs and tupelov planes structures look pretty similar to the boeing jets IMO

The city is Christchurch New Zealand. The approach to the airport is over not very populated land. I'm only telling you what I saw and experienced. It was far and above the largest and loadest thing I have seen. I wouldn't have even bothered looking up if it was a 747. It's engines didn't produce the high piched sound of the AN-225 it had a very low and earth shaking pitch. No one I know has seen or heard of it and that is why I was compelled to mention it. Someone may know something, that's all

Sorry lost the 1st comment. Back in 1996 my truck got a flat just south of Christchurch airport. I got out to change it and heard an unusual sound. I looked south and saw something very large coming in to land. It flew right overhead at about 200 ft. It had 4 sets of 2 engines per wing and 4 on the tail.The engines were rectangular and incredibly load. It was easily twice the wingspan of a 747 and was akin to having a city fly over your head. The sound was absolutely deafening.

Continued. There were 8 wheels per landing gear 2 sets per wing and one in front. The plane was painted flat black with no markings on it but must have been American as they ferry stuff down to Antarctica from there. I'm not one to be frightened but this was the most horrendous and intimidating thing I had ever witnessed. Definately black ops and it has never been seen or heard of since. If any of you plane buffs have any idea what it was I woud love to find out.

Antonov has actually resumed production on the second 225. They said that the 225 and 124s are chartered so much, theyre resuming production ont he second 225 to help keep up with the market. Ive been inside this airplane when I used to be a refueler. Its a warehouse with wings. Awesome display of construction and design.
