when the user's looking at the maps application and 'presses' back, why isn't there any state saved for the maps application? where does the maps application 'go'? what if the user had changed something that they would like to see again next time they launch maps? is this a different scenario and so the app needs to save its state in some other way?

..no, I'm wrong. The mail 'activity' that's in the activity manager part of the system process is the 'mail list' activity, and it's created *before* the mail process itself. If it was from some previous instance of the mail process it would have some saved state on it, but it doesn't....weird. Either I'm very confused, or it's a 'typo' on the video (or both).

Why does the activity manager in the system process have the mail icon at the start, when there's no mail process? Is it because the mail application has a service which has been killed - and will presumably be launched again when it is time to check mail? If that's the case, why doesn't it have any state saved in it? ...but then there's nothing in the 'mail process' when it's created (should have something to represent a server along side the activity, no?). It's confusing me. Any ideas?

The whole point of having Back is so that I and the other millions of users do indeed think of this as being like a web browser. It's so the users can pick up on the interface without thinking about how it's implemented. You don't import a user interface metaphor like Back and then make it leak by breaking Forward. This is asking for confusion. Is there a big reason not to have a forward stack to go with the back stack?

You're thinking of this as being like a web browser, but that's a confusing way of thinking about this. What is being discussed is what happens in the background when one Android application loses focus and another gains it. It's basically a really long way of saying "when an Android application loses focus, its state gets saved, and when an Android application regains focus, its state gets restored." There's a few other details in there, but that's the main message in this video.

Sounds like the Home application is a special case. There is probably a limit to how much memory it will ever need, and since every other application is considered "less important" than the Home application, it should never need to be killed.

From this admittedly brief explanation, Mike explained how Back works but not Forward. You can probably do this by saving the last user interaction (the one that launches the next activity) with the rest of the state information, then restoring it when you go back to the application. Really good question, i explain to you using the example of PC-OS, like Windows. You always have a way to dump the state of memory, and so of your machine, for management and fixes, this means you ALWAYS have an image of ALL processes saved into the memory, for a "work saving" scope. This is the HOME state, i think.

That's a good question. At 2:20 Mike explains activity states are stored "if something bad happens" which is either freeing up memory when there isn't enough of it or when application crashes. I guess that might happen with Home application as well, since it takes up memory as well and nobody's perfect. ;-)

i was beween learning python and ruby and when for ruby because of the rich MVC frameworks that unlike this are OPEN-SOURCE --rails, merb etc. I've come to really like ruby, although i have many gripes about rails--havnt tried merb cause it doesnt have much documentation. i think the pure OO in ruby is awesome and it doesnt try to assert any formatting onto to, you can do it completely is old java/c++ type syntax if you want

I have mixed feelings towards this. Whilst the demo was extremely quick to show, it certainly lacked complexity. I would like to see a demo which had : a) A more complex structured object and associated databases (that looked like all SQL had to be hand coded, ouch) b) More complex business logic (where would all the business logic be defined? Where can default actions be defined for administrative functions? How can Individual user actions etc be defined?)

I didn't say I don't use high level frameworks when it makes sense. My point was simply to point out that Python isn't difficult to code in like the first guy I replied to said. Yes, it's very slow even on dual-core based laptops, when you are on contracts, specially on big projects. It's creating hundreds of temporary files in project directory, which by people commiting them by mistake. And its completing for you brackets, quotes, even if you don't need them. I'm kind of person when I know what I type on the keyboard, but using Eclipse, it's like Word, which is changing everything which you typed. The only things good are java getters or setters and file patching.

Is anyone else worried about this security model? Once the user has granted the rights up front they cannot stop any action the app decides to take. Also, how do external web services trust this application? Since the cert associated with this app is self signed no external party can trust its identity. Do I have to add an onscreen challenge/response to every single call the app makes out to external services? How does mail work? On the iPhone they've got a cert that my mail provided trusts.

How is it that I can't read a simple PDF. file. No Office Mobile Apps. available for this "super" I was on the phone for hours with Tec support to find out I can't read any PDF. files at all. that crazy. I think is a perfect option for my daughter who hair is severly damaged from perms. We do not want to perm her hair anymore and she is tired of wearing braids. I want everyone to know that the adhesive used in this video is not Glue! It is Medical Grade Adhesive and if safe for the skin! This technique if really for someone who doesn't have any hair but more people who have have like this technique. Therefore if you have hair, some of the adhesive will get on the hair in order to not have the wig placed on the forehead. You are correct, the hair is supposed to be placed on the skin only. The techniques is also for someone who has severe alopecia but women with hair want the technique. Hi, I am not trying to be argumentative or disrespectful. It is my understanding that the glue is supposed to be used on the skin, not the hair. The lace adheres to the skin. However, a very nice look was achieved on the model. Very pretty.

You could go to third party application websites where they let u download those applications and let you put it in ur jailbroken ipod touch 1g just google "jailbreak ipod touch" if you want to know more..its too much to type and explain here.sorry =( But i would like to add as an advice for you to buy the 2nd generation. Its better and applications arnt even that expensive.. Its not worth all the trouble because jailbroken ipod touches' will lag and cause trouble.. just my opinion =D

Just so you know, the 2G has some improvements to it, like volume buttons on the outside of the iPod and it feels better in your hand. Also, I don't know if the bug has been fixed but syncing your iPod will tremendously slow down if you download things directly onto your 1G iPod. Also, "jailbreaking" is illegal and can break your iPod, so I don't reccommend it. :) Go with the 2G :D

lolz k.. ipod touch 1st generation the one released a year ago(i think) is jailbreakable.. meaning you can download applications into it.. the ipod touch 2nd generation, the one that came out last month, is not.. And you have to use itunes to download applications into it.. but applications range from 0.99 - 20 dollars.. usually they are about a dollar each.. You may view youtube using wifi. you can download DVD 2 ipod converters i don't really recommend them because Ive heard they take a lot of space on your computer and take a long time to convert INSTEAD i would recommend just downloading the movie u want ipodtvnova(.)com is a good site 4 movies and tv shows but if you go there you also have to download a file called utorrent it's really easy just google utorrent download that then go to ipodtvnova and download what you like. all the files there are already formatted for ipod

Ok, good point. MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle are quite heavy. But you don't need a database system, you could have your registries stored on XML files.

Depends on the use for it. I'm hardly gonna set up an Oracle or PostgreSQL database to keep my home inventory on am I? The RDBMS systems you are talking about are enterprise level. Access/Bento are mainly a front end, however there is enough back end available to produce small tasks (eg 2GB on a MS Jet engined DB is fine)

What can you do with bento/access/filemaker? erm... oh i know! I can make lame databases of all my original cooking recipes! erm... yeah right! People who have real uses for databases use industrial quality software like MySQL, SQLLite, etc (free and opensource btw). If you *really* need a frontend use something like phpmyadmin (again free and opensource). You can't even share data between multiple users and processes with filemaker and co. What's the point honestly?

Chris, It seems that you don't know exactly what a database is. What you are talking about is a database handling software. The main purpose of a Database software is to store data and retrieve them when you need. MS Access does this job you are talking about, but it's interface killed it. Good examples of Databases: Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Lite, etc. (the last three are free). Many database handling software uses one of the above databases to store data.

I learned how to use access last year. Other than the integration with the microsoft office work suite apps, it annoys the hell out of me. It is a terrible application. I'll give you a reference, to learn like everything there is about excel took about 3 weeks to learn. The curriculum allocated 2 MONTHS to access.

I have not used this but it looks to be a (Personal) Content Management System not a database. Granted CMSs are usually web functionality and document managers built on a database. Bento does have advantages over CMSs by sticking to one platform it can take advantage of OS libraries where most are limited to what can be done with cross platform web technologies (supporting IE7/IE6/FF/S/O). GUI apps have much more file permissions and given equal time in development GUI apps are more reliable.
