Venus project? Technocracy, we all know that every technology we have in emperfect, even the simplest screw, and the most upto date computer because it is built and maintained by human beings. A computerized government will suffer from glitches, which could be disasterous, and the only people who would be able to fix it, would be the technocratic class, who would be our overlords at that point. We cannot technocrize society, we can democratize it.

I see no contradiction, if you look at my country of Canada, there is a large diversity of culture and ideas however they are all engaged in the overall culture of our country. Some people try to stay isolated from it but they are growing fewer. Most people embrace the values of the country while holding on to pieces of their past. Trying to preserve your cultural heritage is good, but not trying to preserve it at all costs or trying to make it so it doesn't change at all. Things change and evolve, culture follows the same pattern. It won't have to converge into a superculture, there will always be diversity, but overall culture will begin to homogenize as global economics, tourism etc increase. Various aspects from different cultures will begin to influence others hopefully for the better.

DirectX is not "from scratch". Modern graphic cards+directX make many crucial calculations for you. Old school you coded your own polygon etc fillers from scratch. Your own asm code actually did put every pixel on screen. Inner loops had to be fast. -) Ofcourse effects in demos were precalculated as much as possible. These Future Crew guys worked on some gfx card, after that dont know where they went..

definitely... second reality was one of the very first times i heard music like this, when i was about 11. remember being stunned by the graphics and music running on my 486! still get goosebumps at 5:14. now i'm a well known international recording artist making breakbeat, drum'n'bass etc. so thanks a lot skaven and purple motion! big up the scene(s) :)

I think games and demo music are the origins of the today's electronic music scene. Growing up in 8 and 16 bits sounds like this... sound channels from 1 to a lot of... After the built in sounds of the Videoton TV computer (in Hungary) the famous C64 and Amiga there are soundcards from Adlib, through Gravis... we allways heard music's like this! It's not a wonder that today we do the same but it's now called electronic trance, dance etc. music

Watching these demos back in '93 I couldn't grasp the complexity of the code behind it. Only recently I tried to program DirectX for a business application and then I realized how complex it is to code 3D from scratch. Unfortunately most of these guys ended writing banking or similarly boring applications for insanely bureaucratic software houses.
