Not to mention they are created by the state through state charter.

If it weren't for some amount of "corporate personhood", those businesses wouldn;t even exist. Ah...I love the smell of destitution and poverty...
By: jasrid04. on 06 Jan 09, 05:15:43
Wrong. Libertarians want freedom for the INDIVIDUAL. NOT "Tyranies." True, corporations as they exist today are perverted and act tyrannically. However, that is because they are CREATURES OF THE STATE. They enjoy "Corporate Personhood", limmited liability, (usully) taxation bennefits, and other bennefits 'granted' to them by THE STATE. campaignforliberty . com

Schools and studies. Hmmmm. Very compelling. At the end of the day no one is FORCING me to shop or work at WalMart.
By: lakeviewviking. on 05 Jan 09, 07:35:27
It is actually Chomsky and his allies who want political control over others not libertarians (at least consistent libertarians, which is why i think libertarians running for office is a waste of time). To be fair, Chomsky is a vocal critic of the left's slide into flippant deconstructionism over the past 30 years...at least you know where chomsky stands, whereas one can't even get a straight answer out of your typical "Cultural Studies" text.

Implying that there is a minimum wage immediately defeats the idea that we live in a free market. In a free market, people are paid by what the market demands because there labor is a product just like anything else. The reasons corporations thrive is because the market is so regulated and taxed it is almost impossible for new comers to get into the business. If I wanted to start selling sandwiches that I make myself, my overhead would be thousands of dollars before I even considered supplies.
By: DaveIrie. on 04 Jan 09, 14:31:47
It's kind of true. Like those who say they're 'Constitutionalists' & want to 'restore the Republic' I wonder when was the U.S. ever not an imperialist corporatist force of domination of others?
By: myroseaccount. on 04 Jan 09, 01:11:10
Chomsky is not against a FREE MARKET per se! It is simply the case that a free market DOES NOT EXIST. This is actually all he is saying. We live in an era of corporate MERCANTILISM! large corporate, mostly private, institutions, dominate markets and commerce. They do this with government support. without the TAXPAYERS our present system is unsustainable! Government's role it to ensure profit and ROI is maintained! However, profit is diminishing! I ain't working for minimum wage! How about U?
By: strike2inciner8. on 04 Jan 09, 00:49:09
Simple and straight forward if you don't analyze his sources, or his argument. You'll guickly find he's citing unproven symptoms of his idea of a free market, not imperial evidence. Also, he claims to know the "real" views of several critical thinkers who are dead. How can you propose to know what they really meant without asking? Sounds silly to me.
By: strike2inciner8. on 04 Jan 09, 00:46:48
But in a free market, a company, GE or otherwise, would provide electricity because its a profitable business. There is an inelastic demand for electricity. They wouldn't be given a monopoly on an area by the government like they are now. Innovation would happen and costs would decrease. Think outside the keynesian economic box.
By: strike2inciner8. on 04 Jan 09, 00:42:20
Wall street isn't a free market, it's regulated by law and plundered by taxes. If you think socializing costs of big business is a problem, you should be against the federal reserve, not the free market.
By: strike2inciner8. on 04 Jan 09, 00:40:53
Quotes are not arguments.
By: RezaDemocrat. on 03 Jan 09, 01:54:57
So why cant the right do the same...
By: RezaDemocrat. on 03 Jan 09, 01:54:29
The majority of the people is pretty dumb when it comes to political science. After almost five years at the university I have meet plenty of un-intellectual professors. Most of them have an agenda, a left-wing one that they impose on the students. The students are also pretty dumb so they buy everything they say, noone thinks outside the box because noone wants to be social exkluded. With no-arguments and name calling you can get people on your side. The left have been doing so for years..
By: freeyourcrt. on 02 Jan 09, 16:57:58
Your statement is by far one of the most persuasive and most likely to create conformity: Posing as the opposition yourself, you paint all who don't worship at the altar of Chomsky and his phony intellectualism as blabbering bigoted knuckle draggers, The kicker is to then falsely associate this fictional troglodyte you've created with some group you wish to discredit but have no argumentative way of doing so. Again, it's basic but effective to swaying those who won't think for themselves.
By: zasterguava. on 02 Jan 09, 02:19:54
Again, this is an argument FOR free market capitalism, not against.
By: XericJager. on 01 Jan 09, 23:00:18
The bailout and re-capitalization is the fault of government not capitalism. A capitalist society has no 500 pound gorilla collecting and printing money to redistribute to the failing Fortune 500 Wall Street corporations. It's in Chomsky's wold/society where that is an option.
By: myroseaccount. on 01 Jan 09, 22:51:33
No substance? he provides direct quotes from the Wealth of Nations! Von Mises, Hayek and Friedman are credited with a REVIVAL of Classical Liberal thought in the mid 20th century. They adapted it in a way that Chomsky and others suggest is very different from the enlightenment ideals of Smith, Jefferson and so on!
By: myroseaccount. on 01 Jan 09, 22:44:19
Like those great free marketeers on WALL STREET and the FORTUNE 500. All bailed out and being re-capitalised at public expense. Public subsidy and PRIVATE profit. The profit is privatised, the costs and risks are socialised. Just ask a BANKER!
By: myroseaccount. on 01 Jan 09, 22:42:24
Most major corporations, private and public, are unaccountable. Take just one example, how do I hold General Electric to account? Through the market? How? I could buy my lightbulbs from Phillips and my nuclear reactors from the French! Or I could ask the UK government not to buy reactors or weapons or spend my taxes on GE defence equipment! I think we diverge from Adam Smith's free market at this point. Without government GE would not exist for a second! Hence, one of the points Chomsky makes!
By: myroseaccount. on 01 Jan 09, 22:33:22
5 minutes of simple straightforward reason and common sense! Who says that complex and difficult things can't be communicated easily and quickly!
By: zasterguava. on 30 Dec 08, 14:43:20
Also, libertarianism is not an American 'perversion'- this is again a linguistic ploy (bordering on racist) by Chomsky to demonise and chastise a position without providing substance. Most Anarcho-capitalist base their ideas on classical liberal ideas and the economic theories of Austrian economists such as Ludwig Von Mises. I would be interested in hearing what 3rd world countries have been retarded in growth by liberalization. Zimbabwe perhaps (=;?
By: zasterguava. on 30 Dec 08, 14:36:02
Chomsky unwittingly disproves the claim that libertarianism/unhindered capitalism is optimum for the 'fortunate' to exercise tyranny over the unfortunate by stating that the "wealthy would never allow it" as "they use the levers of power" (government) to exercise tyranny and the free market challenges the power structure. This is an argument FOR free market capitalism! Also, calling the private sector 'unnacountable tyrannies' is a masterclass in dishonest linguistics.
By: freeyourcrt. on 28 Dec 08, 20:19:52
Agreed, votes are counted. There's some chicanery on the fringes to be sure, but the larger fraud goes on unabated. If the powerful control only the media and the parties, what say do you and I ultimately have? BTW, I am not sure I really have a problem with politicians being influenced. After all, that is their job isn't it?
By: newperve. on 28 Dec 08, 01:44:45
The problem is that if they had a direct say in their government the war would still have happened. The claim that people are never in favour of war before PR blitzes is irrevelent, there will be a PR blitze and they will want to kill. Anyway it's doubtful it's true.
