You should perhaps buy Sassy Swings the Tivoli, a live album recorded a couple of years prior to this show - the arrangement is the same and the performance is as good, if not better (hard to believe, I know). I think she originally recorded Misty for an album called Vaughan and Violins, but the Quincy Jones arrangement is a bit too lush - she was always better with a trio.

I saw her in Wakefield in the early 70s when it was thick snow and half the band had failed to turn up for first house. She took it all in her stride and told us to stay for the next house as two or three more of the band had turned up. The lady was sheer class and is sorely missed.

I don't understand the criticism of this rendition not sounding jazzy enough. Erroll Garner has one recording in which he plays Misty with a smooth jazz flow. But in the recording with Mitch Miller, Erroll plays Misty in more classical style, very similar to this video featuring Nubo. I think that Erroll would be please with Nubo's rendition of Misty.

I enjoy Ray Steven's version too. It came out in May, 1975 when I was just a Junior High schooler. Very fun, innocent and happy times. I was only 14 and weighed 114 pounds! Thirty three and a half years transpired, in the twinkling of an eye. I also like Mathis' version too. Makes me wonder how life would be like if I was 14-years-old in 1959.

You need hands the size of shovels first! Apparently, Tal could stretch over 7 frets easily and look how that thumb wraps around the bass strings; no effort at all. He gave up playing for a number of years in the height of his career, to go back to 'Sign-writing'. Reckoned most of the music jazzmen played had been explored to the full and it needed a new slant. Hence 'smooth jazz'. Maybe?

I love tal but I agree that he is playing to many chord changes in there like some keyboard players I know. It does take away from the smooth melody But what the heck he's Tal if that's what he's feeling right now so be it. I'm pretty sure he probally does not play it the same every time.

i think he is putting way to many chord changes in here and it is not needed its more like a show off thing, i think this sounds sloppy and rough, all the changes take away from the pretty melody too, tal is a legend tho

I saw him live at the Blue Note in NYC around 1980-81. My table was no more than 8 feet from the stage. It was an incredible evening, it was a trio, guitar, bass and drums. His style is very unique. If you like, get his album from around 1969, I think it's called The Return of Tal Farlow.

The way these jazz guys maintain their fingers in their (pardon) old age is incredible. I know people who are in their forties and have arthritis so bad they can't type. These guys work incredibly hard to stay sharp. The thing that gets me too is that this isn't the style Tal plays most of the time. He's more of a bebop guy. That's versatility. If you guys like this chord melody work then check out a guy named Ed Bickert. Canadian guitarist. Played with Paul Desmond awesome stuff.

Freddie is an amazing improvisor. When he's busy...he's saying something...when he's reserved he's saying something. To say that he is too busy, is to admit that the critic has no ears for jazz improvisation. (Must be a wedding band player at the DAV Hall, or something). Every quick flurry line he played colored the solo just the way he intended...Can't you hear it...can't you tell?

It was very very good. My only problem is that it was a bit busy for the song. Misty is a standard and sounds best when played very clean. I'm just not big on his interpretation of the song. He is an excellent player none the less.

What a crock of shit. Charlie Parker recorded his "best" album with a plastic saxophone b/c he hocked his good one for smack. Another good one I've heard is that a person can fix their intonation by buying a "good" clarinet. It's all crap. The way a person gets good is by practicing, practicing and listening. This person is probably in instrument sales or plays in their local orchestra.

hey Tony, If you really want to play the trumpet don't make the mistake and buy a cheap one. That's like racing a volkswagon in the indy 500. Many people give up because they can't get past the bad instrument. Rare are those who strive to be the best by starting on a cheap instrument. When I finally got a decent one I was in heaven. I was able to play without the restrictions of a terrible instrument. Besides you can always sell a good horn. You'll always get stuck with a bad one.
