Try booker's 'That's it' record also. Horace Parlan on piano and they play 'poinciana' and 'speak low'. Coltrane is obviously way beyond everything else (in any art form, ever), but Booker was also a unique and singular voice. The 'tartness' of his sound has never really been approached by any tenor player i have heard. There are pitch-worlds only Booker Ervin has been to. The record with Dexter Gordon is pretty cool also.

Compare Miles' earlier quintet pianist Red Garland who improvised lines mostly within the strict scale that goes with the chord and voiced chords in 3rds. Bill Evans in this piece here plays a lot of voicings with dissonant rubs in the chords, the 7th against the root etc. which gives it an impressionist sound. This wasn't innovative in itself since it was already done by Debussy in the 1800s. But he brought this impressionist sound to the jazz mainstream, so he's considered innovative.

What is truly remarkable about his playing is i.e. the use of quarter chords (he developed that technique very differently from McCoy Tyner in that time. And if you listen carefully you'll notice that the way that he displaces his phrases are very unique. But to me, his voicings are the true charm. Play a Ghalfdiminished from high to low like this: G - Db - Bb - Eb - A. The first chord of Bill's version of " On a clear day you can see forever" He was really ahead of his time.

Besides all the technical hype that is true with Bill, he created a sound that was distinct to him. It's on Kind of Blue, and also his early albums with cuts like Peace Peace. I think that it is more apparent in his slower numbers. Try Bill Evans-My Foolish Heart here on youtube. I recognized Walter Davis, right away. He later worked in Dizzy's touring band in the 80s. Anyway, this is a great clip. Wayne might be ass-backwards on the clave, but there's no rules in this stuff, it's just music in its purest form. Somebody mentioned there's a ska version of this? I'd like to hear it. For the open minded folks, there's also a 'surf music' version by Laika and the Cosmonauts.

yes, but clave is clave. If you're going to play a "latin tune" and apply clave to it, everyone knows that that you should follow the norm as far as clave goes and everyone knows that Tunisia is 2-3 clave (and no, I'm not a salsa freak) Shorter just didn't know and Blakey didn't correct him, even though he was playing 2-3 "cascara" pattern on the cymbals.

I never heard that. They often used tritones. In the simplest explanation, classical music is all about introduction and resolution of the tritone. Everyone just has different ways to get in and out of it. They never played the locrian mode for the reason you gave. They did play tritones.

Each scale and mode has a formula like that with steps and half steps. If you only use the white notes of the piano and use C as the 1st degree and hit all the white notes that is the formula for a major scale. Srart on D and go to D using only white notes that is the formula for Dorian mode. Start on the 6th degree which is A and using only white note going up to A, that's the formula for the Aeolian mode or more commonly referred to as natural minor.

I messed up in my excitement. The formula is 1-1-1/2-1-1-1-1/2..so..1-CtoD-1-DtoE-1/2EtoF1FtoG1GtoA1AtoB1/2BtoC for a major scale. So, instead of going from E to F you would go to F#.

Rap is only a means of expression. Hip-hop is the musical style. Although it will continue to change and evolve, it's here to stay. Many people have a negative opinion of hip-hop because they hear only the bullshit on the radio (Ludacris, 50-Cent, etc.). Those people should try listening to Common or Talib Kweli or Tribe Called Quest to understand that hip-hop is as legitimate and artful as any other form of music. GOOD hip-hop typically contains a lot of jazz elements actually.

People who like this tune should check out the "original" version taken from one of "The Three Sounds" albums called "Here We Come", which is ten times better and featuring Andy Simpkins on bass and Gene Harris. This trio has been ignored for such a long time people forgot them. They used to play the best soul jazz one can possibly play, and recorded at least 15 albums for Blue Note in the 50s and 60s, as they were so popular!

If you like pianist Gene Harris, you should check out a guy in NYC named Paul Tillotson. He is Gene's protege in Boise Idaho. I've had the privilege of getting to know him and he's an awesome pianist and a great guy. Also if you like this music, check out some of the other bands that Ray and Gene were in together: The 3 sounds The Gene Harris quartet. Get "The concord years" double CD. :) They had a beautiful friendship and made great music together. :)

By far the greatest arrangement and performace of Summertime I've ever heard. I love the lilting bassline, the terrifying trills at the top end of the piano, the subtle and gorgeous harmonies, the dynamic rises and falls, Gene's delicious blues influences, his mastery of phrasing and timing, and the combo just groove so well. Its simply outstanding and so sacred to hear music at this quality. Words cannot describe how this makes me feel. Breathtaking.

You wouldn't think it possible for anyone to lead into a blues in the middle of Summertime make it sound like the same tune. That's the thing about Gene, he loved the blues with a passion and couln't stay away if he tried. Odd how he plays the first 4 bars of the first chorus twice. Sounds like a mistake. If so, Ray and Jeff cover him with the seamlessness you'd expect from those guys. Awesome.

Man this is so full of soul is scary.The kicker is when at about 5 min 30 seconds in, he goes into the groove and people go nuts. Nothing against relly intricate type jazz music, but it's hard for it to grab you like that does. Music doesn't have to be totally full of complex changes all the time. He wasn't playing for musicians he was playing for himself and the people in the audience and it was spectacular. Love it Gene!!!

I was at this gig and it feels like it was just a few weeks ago - not 26 years!!! The greatest performance I ever heard Sonny play was at the astrolabe in Ottawa when his opening calypso lasted about fifteeen minutes - the only music I have ever heard that got me airborne and made me feel like I was flying - just the most incredible aesthetic rush - and I wasn't on anything - so thank you for the music, Sonny, and the memories!

Sonny Rollins is the greatest ever on Tenor. You see so many sax players switch up and play all the saxes. But Sonny's focus on the tenor sax has made him an unmistakable GIANT among sax players. That is what I love about Sonny...you always know the sound that you are going to get. Also his improv is out of this world. As a tenor player myself, I choose to follow after sonny and only play the tenor. I have played all the saxes, but now feel at home on the tenor. Love ya Sonny!!!!

It's really like comparing Trane to Rollins....you can compare but saying one is better than the other is insane. Rollins was more feeling and playing while improvising over the melody and Trane was more theory oriented and they are/were beautiful people

I saw this very group in 1983 at Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts. The Don't Stop the Carnival was the biggest blowout of my entire life. Unfortunately so far I can't find it done like that by Sonny on youtube. If I could I'd be very happy because I could get those moments back. It made a big difference when he used great musicians like DeJohnette and Cranshaw.

He plays so amazingly, that you dont have to know this song to hear the lyrics. The phrasing is just beautiful. Like the short note at 0:25, you can hear a word through that sound. What that word is, probably waries, but its something beautiful, especially if you are in Love ;) Sonny is the king!

It was really since I heard Bill playing on the live album Miles had out......I can't think of the name off hand but I believe it might have been newport...either way Bill caught my ear and from then on.....he has been my favorite. I love his classical touch to jazz. What a strange thing to say. From what I can gather the vast majority of jazz musicians all had some sort of education in music. All practised for thousands of hours. I rather think that everyone has 'it' inside them and you've just got to want to work hard enough to get it out. I'm not a natural bass player but I'm practising (fairly) hard and I'm sounding a damn sight cooler than I did a couple of years ago.

Tatauvalle: há muitos anos eu achei um LP original do Charlie Parker de 1946, LP produzido na França, mas comprado em São Paulo mesmo. Aquilo era o começo de uma Era sem igual. Miles Davis tinha 19 anos quando começou a tocar com Parker. Ele esteve SEMPRE no lugar certo e na hora certa. Esse quinteto de 1964 até 1967 é absolutamente histórico...Tony William, Hancock, Shorter, Carter. O VSOP com o Freddie Hubbard era fantástico, mas claro que já veio depois, não era tão original. Abs.

Pois é, Justino. Essa caracteristica o faz único, não? Mas vale lembrar que em seus primeiros trabalhos ele "quebrava o pau". Vc conhece o LP Charlie Parker Story? de 1945. É o bebop na veia. De quebra tem o Max Roach. Mas o que vem depois do Birth of Cool e o estudo da musica modal é o que mais me encanta. Bom mas tbm adoro as linhas de trabalho do Lee Morgan, do Chet e do Fred Hubbards. tranquilo tatauvalle...Está explicado. Mas existe uma discussão positiva sobre a maneira de solar do Miles Davis em comparação com outros músicos mais "virtuosos". O Miles não tinha exatamente grande técnica, mas o som era absolutamente único, com ou sem as surdinas! Isso é rarísssimo, ainda mais em termos de trompete. Ele "engasga" muitas vezes, mas o foco é sempre melódico, coisa que o Coltrane não tinha tanto, ele curtia mais texturas, energia, etc...Enfim, bons comentários. Abraço.

E a fase desse video de "I fall in love too easily" é incrível. Admiro muito, pois é quando o Miles começa aprofundar a utilização dos ritmos nas suas obras. Que tem o apice com o Jack DeJohnnete, Airto, Coban, Badal...e ainda as quebradas desconcertantes de Corea, Zawinul, Hancock...aff. Era a seleção de 70 do Pelé e a do Miles em campo!

Com o garoto Ron Carter, Victor Feldman, Herbie, Tony, Butler, George Coleman. sukapura, you might believe as I do, that this is the greatest jazz group ever. I'm aware of the group that included Cannonball, Coltrane, Evans/Kelly. If this group is 100, then the Kind of Blue group would be 99.5. Then there's Art Blakey's Messengers and well as Horace's Messengers [1954], all 98 or better. The four years Miles Smiles performed changed the face of jazz forever; in a direction substantially different from Return to Forever or Weather Report. What I'm trying to say is Thanx!

Esta apresentação mostra claramente do que o trompete é capaz. A maioria dos instrumentos tem trÊs funçoes básicas; gerar o som, modular(notas) e amplificar. No trompete, o som não é gerado no instrumento, mas sim pelo músico, fica claro portanto porque Miles é Miles.
