You personally think. But actually it's known that if you are looking for a career in fighting, you better go karate. Nobody knows whats better on the street though. I personally think wushu kung fu is more of a beutiful martial art! But many good fighters are Kyokushin karate practioneers. Besides it was Kyokushin rules and all. Originally the modern type of kumite wasn't a part of karate. It was made in order to let people compete. So karate isn't supposed to have that many methods really. If you study for sport, or recreation or just plain fun then that is surely a valid reason, especially when you (potentially) will never have a need to defend yourself. But graveyards are full of "nice, people that never looked for a fight", but the fight found them in robbery,assault,rape,burglary.Especially in places in the world far more dangerous than perhaps where you live. most of what you are saying I agree with, BUT what is ther purpose of having multiple methods...(mostly that is just a cop out excuse with no substantial logical answer). In a stress environment you will default to your training, if you say well "in bunkai" its different than kumite, " well...uhh..well.. you see... if it was for REAL ...uhhh we would do it differently. And to repeat myself, you're right. Karate kumite looks like kickboxing. As I said, it's because kumite has rules so you can't use most bunkai techniques. And since kumite is about scoring points, there would be no gain in using real combat techniques when quick sissy techniques will score you a point. Kumite is just a way of training reflexes and spirit. Not combat simulation. Of course, krav Maga and the likes is still more effective, but I think you exaggerate the ineffectiveness of karate.

I do not know about the details of the styles you have studied but from what I've learned the way bunkai and kihon are demonstrated in shows such as this video is not the way karate is intended to be used in a real life confrontation. For example, using a full zenkutsudachi with a regular yoko uke is not meant for real life, it's just the method of training your body. IRL the actual execution of karate techniques would probably resemble those of something like Krav Maga.

I understand your point of view and I agree that karate is not THE most effective combat system with the focus on other stuff than fighting and their traditional way of thinking. But not being the best doesn't mean it's completely useless. I know martial arts is about combat but seeing how little the odds are of a normal nice person ending up in a fight, it would truly be a waste of time to be practising a martial art without the additional benefit of fun, fitness or mental training.

Regarding the "thousands of styles" I don't find it worth my time to mention many but I hope you do realise that most bigger styles like Shito Ryu or Goju Ryu have a lot of sub styles. They were in need of a good combat system just as much as the military, even more since they lacked the numbers and equipment the military had. Back then times were difficult for farmers. Most MMA arts are great for a few things. Competitions, School/bar fights, and messing around with friends. The entire point of San Soo is that you can't do full on sparring. In the sparring we do I've been hit and pee'd blood for the next few days (they didn't pull the punch enough). Google Jimmy Woo to get a better idea.

Actually our instructor trained under Jimmy Woo, who was the first one to teach San Soo to non-asians. San Soo has NOTHING to do with chi or any of that bs. It's just joints, vital organs, and leverage, along with striking. Also, after you've trained for 3 years (to get a beginners skills) you start using weapons (traditional chinese ones). The main difference is that San Soo is made for real world fights, where you use everything around you to help gain an advantage. (cont.)

i don't think that tkd is bad. both types of martial arts, karate and tkd, are useful in different ways. but here you can see clearly that karate is the better way to defence yourself. tkd looks good when they make their kicks and jumps. karate may doesn't look as good as tkd but it's better in the streets and a better kind of fighting. if you don't know what i mean just look at the simple ko of the tkd fighter. no more power becauso of his useless highkicks!

Black trim on a gi is a sure way to get your butt handed to you when you face me. TkD is only for people who have no desire to enter into a real martial art. You pay your money, you get your belt.
