the setting should be in AC voltage(alternating current)because household electricity is in AC voltage and your range should be higher than 240 volts. BTW there are multimeters with auto-range functions their a lot easier to use hope this could help you.

the knob should be in ac function (im assuming your measuring your household electric connection which is AC) and the range should be greater than your desired magnitude so it should be greater than 240 volts hope this could help you. BTW there are dmms with autorange function their a lot easier to use

they should take a close up to the instrument itself and explain the different settings.

I was in tears from laughing at the guy who rolled past with the "ghetto" meter.

You don't show, explain how to use it, you just show what can be checked with it.

thanks for the help!

im trying to use this on my house electrics, but theres about 20 settings and I dont know which one to use on 240volts.

oops, silly me when I read the title 'how to use a multimeter', I actually thought they were going to show how to use a multimeter......my mistake just a pair of sad nerds bullshitting to each other

Im still learning about alot of this stuff. really interesting hearing other pros comments...Im wondering if any1 can lead me to some good dmm vids. in particular, actually testing an electrical outlet with my dmm(plug in the wall!!)At my bloody ends wit.

AC refers to Alternating Current...
By: johnnyQuest11. on 22 May 08, 16:29:28
what would you say to the high internal impedence of a DMM (digital multimeter) which is designed to protect internal, electronic components from damage during testing, giving false voltage readings on dead circuits, when measuring house wiring, which can often happen?
By: johnnyQuest11. on 22 May 08, 16:24:22
pretty cool guys. make more! like how to test a bad circuit or electronic device or appliance. or show all the functions of how a multimeter can be used.

is not what im looking for but is useful

the "ac" is jus referring to the amps(S.I unit of amperage.i suspect the multimeter of there's is spoiled.
By: tonyrueb. on 02 May 08, 14:17:38
separate they are bad together they are a band: no but really. AC is alternating current meaning it osculates (in the US it is 60 Hz and eruope 50hz) the reading you get from a multimeter on AC current its generaly the RMS voltage whigh is a way of averaging it being the voltage is contently changing. in the us the standard rms outlet voltage is 120 volts and 170 max voltage (when it is at its highest)

correction: kilo ohms means 1000 ohms
By: tonyrueb. on 02 May 08, 01:22:55
Mega means million kilo means 1000 mili means 1/1000 therefor a megaohm is 1million ohms a kilo ohm means 100 ohms a miliohm means 1/1000 ohms

This is poor. They start-out by doing a 'continuity test' - but fail to tell where the pointer should be on the multimeter. They then do the same with 'resistance mode' - WHERE DO WE SET THE DIAL? If this is supposed to be a 'beginner's guide', then please start from the beginning. These people are making the most elementary errors of teaching - ASSUMING the students know the basics. How about re-doing this piece, only this time show where you are putting the pointer on the multimeter. Useless.

how do you measure the volts in your CAR!!!! worng answer
