Really, when the whole steam vs diesel argument comes up, I think a minute and just tell people "steam wins, hands down" and then I list my reasons why. Personally, it wouldn't matter to me what they would fire #4005 with. To see her run again would be a thing of beauty. I just hope that some of the green tech my company manufactures could one day be applied to trains, steam in particular. Then we can all tell diesels to bite it!!!

Actually, they did convert Big Boy #4005 to burn oil and it worked perfectly. The only issue was that it used such a huge amount! This was back in the late 1940's during a coal strike. 4005 is also on display right now at a museum in Denver, CO.

That's very true, I think the railroads can handle a Big Boy today, considering they can handle the Challenger. I've stuck with 4023 as a candidate to be the one that gets restored. There are 8 Big Boys around the country so finding repair parts would not be hard. As for the coal, I think they would need to convert the Big Boy to burn oil.

Yup. I've seen the 4014. Cosmetically, its in great shape. The real question is what does she look like on the inside? I say if all the parts are there, clean her up and get her moving again!!! We'll worry about small technical details such as finding a turn-table big enough to turn them later on.

We all have our opinions on this matter. 99% of us are avid steam fans, who enjoy seeing these machines in action. Cockroach has very good points about the fact that they are old, ineffeciant, finical losers, etc. What really needs to stop though, is the heavy support of them being scrapped for good!! No, not steam locos. There are many other things that can be scraped and people wouldn't care. Junker cars, junker boats, junker airplanes. Those could be scrapped with much success!!

And as we all know, the tourist railways/private railways are all funded by donations, grants, etc. Museums have virtually no costs maintaining trains on display, so that's kind of a freebie. To the best of my knowledge, the only North American railways that have "active" steam programs are the UP and the CP in Canada. Even if for some sad reason those programs ended, the trains wouldn't be scrapped. They would be preserved, either sent to a museum or private RR.

I understand where you come from Cockroach. You invest in railroads, that have NO steam programs, because you make money. Even though the truth is, steam programs on main railroads are (99.9% of the time) funded by people such as myself and not stock holders like you and owners and other high end people. You may chip in a tiny amount, but its really not enough to destroy your budget. Yes, steam engines today exist as trans on a tourist RR, or they are in a museum.

I've just got to add my thanks for posting this fabulous demonstration of railroading. Many of the shots are sublime. The image of the train passing the wayside grain elevators strikes my British eye as 'very American'. I also liked the almost head-on shot of the locomotive climbing the curving embankment. The designer accomplished something massive, powerful, but also very beautiful indeed. Glory machine for sure.

The biggest two cylinder British locomotives which are very small compared with this magnificent beast, create up to about 20, tons of 'hammer blow' to the track due to a mixture of unbalanced weights in the valve motion and piston forces. The equivalent forces in the case of this locomotive must be higher. (Three and four cylinder engines don't hammer the track so hard, I understand.) It is a thought, which maybe does not go down too well with track repair workers!

Wow... It's amazing how that thing can run that fast for that long and not destroy the wheel connecting rods. The forces acting on those reciprocating assemblies and associated hardware must be pretty intense. Awesome vid, I wish there were more steam locomotives in the northeast U.S.

This is probably one of the best train pacing videos out there, mainly because the angle is more interesting than 90 degrees. The spinning drivers can be seen as well as the tender swaying on the rails. The best part about this video is its title: who couldn't fall for a train named "The Corn Belt Rocket?"

It's sad that you are focusing on the "welfare" aspect of this liberal democracy of ours when, in fact, much of the debt has accrued by, and "your" money has been given to, corporate hands by an inflated Defense budget used no bid contracts. Skip, you did a outstanding job of filming this, the emotion is hard to describe.
